If you have been following my Instagram, you know I often make sheep rattles. They are fun to make, but the pattern is written in Dutch. That’s a bummer for you non-Dutch speaking crocheters! Today, that’s going to change: I will translate the pattern in UK and US terms. These are the materials you need:
– 2.5 mm hook
– 3 mm hook
– 4 ply yarn or other yarn that works well with a 2.5 mm hook, like Phildar Phil Coton 3 in perle
– fluffy yarn, like Phildar Phil Douce in grege
– rattle ball and wooden ring
– yarn needle and scissors
– black and beige yarns, like Yarn and Colors Must-Haves Minis in black and clay
– filling (not shown in photo)
The fluffy parts should be crocheted with the 3 mm hook, the rest with the 2.5 mm hook.
UK terms
Below the pattern are some pictures of the different parts.

Rnd 1: Start with 6 dc in a magic ring.
Rnd 2: inc around (12).
Rnd 3: inc every 2nd st (18).
Rnd 4: 1 dc, *inc, 2 dc*. Repeat *-* until end of round. Last stitch should be 1 dc (24).
Rnd 5: inc every 4th st (30).
Rnd 6: 2 dc, *inc, 4 dc*. Repeat *-* until end of round. Round should end with 2 dc (36).
Rnd 7: inc every 6th st (42).
Rnd 8-10: dc around (42).
Rnd 11: 5 dc, dec (36).
Rnd 12-14: dc around (36).
Rnd 15: 4 dc, dec (30).
Rnd 16: 3 dc, dec (24)
Rnd 17: inc in 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th st. (30)
Rnd 18-19: dc around (30).
Rnd 20: dec 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 23rd and 24th, 25th and 26th, 27th and 28th, 29th and 30th st. (24)
Rnd 21: dc around (24).
Rnd 22: from now on, you only work in the back loops. This leaves loops on the outside of the head. Dc around (24).
Rnd 23: 2 dc, dec (18).
Rnd 24-25: dc around (18).
Rnd 26: 1 dc, dec (12).
Rnd 27: dec around (6).
Finish off and sew in the ends.
With the soft yarn, dc in all the front loops from rounds 22-27. Finish off and sew in the ends. With black yarn, embroider the eyes on round 17. With beige yarn, embroider the nose three times and the mouth once. Place it in between round 1-8.
Ears (2x)
Rnd 1: start with 6 dc in a magic ring (6).
Rnd 2: inc every st. (12)
Rnd 3: inc every 4th (15).
Rnd 4: dc around (15).
Rnd 5: 3 dc, dec (12).
Rnd 6: 2 dc, dec (9).
Rnd 7: dc around (9).
Rnd 8: 1 dc, dec (6).
Rnd 9: flatten the ear and dc along the bottom (closing the gap with 3 dc).
Sew on the fluffy part of the head.
Body
With fluffy yarn: ch 31, turn. *Dc in each st (30), ch 1 and turn* for 6 rounds. I like to measure if I can sew it around the wooden ring, before finishing off. The yarn makes it very impossible to see the stitches, so you can’t really see if you are skipping stitches or making mistakes. It really doesn’t matter, though. The yarn is so fluffy, you can’t see those mistakes. Just go with your own feelings about where the dc’s should go, as long as you are ending up with a mostly straight piece.
With the other yarn, chain 4. *Dc 3, ch 1 and turn* for 12 rounds. Turn sideways, dc along one long side, ch 1 and turn. Slst back along the long side. The side with slst is the end of the foot. Make 2.
Sew the fluffy part around the wooden ring. Then, sew the feet around the ring as well. Sew the side WITHOUT slst onto the fluffy yarn.
Sew the head onto the fluffy yarn. Make everything very tight and secure, since babies will pull things.
US terms
